Drugged driving a problem for Chicago motorists

Although many of us do it every day, driving is an inherently dangerous activity. Improperly maintained vehicles, bad road conditions and inclement weather can all lead to hazardous driving and the risk of an accident. However, human error is often a major contributor to car accidents, and perhaps no behavior is riskier than drunk driving. Yet, for all the attention drunk driving gets, another dangerous activity is often overlooked: drugged driving.

Drugged driving poses a significant threat to Chicago-area motorists. In 2013, an estimated 31 million motorists took to the road throughout the country after consuming drugs or alcohol. One out of every three motorists killed in car wrecks in 2009 were discovered to be drug positive. Perhaps most frightening is that research has shown that driving after marijuana use is more common than driving after alcohol use. A study conducted on high-school seniors found that drivers who use marijuana are 65 percent more likely to get in a car accident.

This is just a small piece of the drugged driving picture. With drug use still rampant in Chicago, it is likely that motorists will, at one time or another, be in the vicinity of another driver who is under the influence of drugs. Those who are under the influence of drugs and cause an accident can cause serious harm. Car accident victims may be left with physical and emotional pain and suffering, and they might suffer financial damages in the form of medical expenses and lost wages.

This is wholly unacceptable, which is why those who have been harmed in an accident caused by the negligence of another may want to take legal action. If liability can be imposed on a negligent driver, like one who is under the influence of drugs, then compensation may be awarded to help cover damages.
