Distracted driver hits 7-year-old child

For many people, driving a car is a fact of life. Even though many people drive a car, at some point most drivers will park their vehicle, walk and may even have to cross streets to get to their final destination. Alhough most of us do not think about it, at any point during our driving, walking and crossing, an accident could occur and cause serious injuries or even death.

When a car accident occurs, the reasons can be varied and can only be identified after an accident investigation is completed by law enforcement. In fact, our Illinois residents will find it interesting to learn that recently a 7-year-old boy in Mattoon, Illinois, was hit by a car while he was trying to cross a street. The boy was airlifted from the accident scene and was listed in critical condition.

Following an investigation by local authorities, reports indicated that the accident occurred in the afternoon, and police alleged that the 17-year-old driver who struck the child was distracted by her cell phone. Specifically, police indicated that the driver of the vehicle was texting at the time of the accident.

Currently, Illinois state law prohibits the use of hand-held devices such as cell phones while driving. In fact, Mattoon authorities have recently increased enforcement of this law. Despite the increased enforcement and an existing law in place, car accidents caused by distracted drivers still happen.

Those who operate vehicles have a duty to observe all traffic laws and be attentive when behind the wheel. If a driver fails to observe existing laws and an accident results, then that driver may be found negligent and may be responsible for damages. Connecting with a personal injury law firm following an accident may be helpful to have the specific facts evaluated.
