Truck accident victims often suffer significant physical and emotional pain and suffering, as well as financial losses in the form of medical expenses and lost wages. While an individual is trying to deal with these matters and recover their health, taking legal action may take a back burner. This is understandable, and accident victims are granted a limited period of time within which to file their claim. Yet, once the decision is made to pursue a personal injury lawsuit, there is some prep work that can prove extremely beneficial.
First, it’s helpful for a victim to gather as much information as possible about the trucker and the truck company. This includes names, license plate number, a list of other entities associated with the trucker and any research conducted. This will help lay the foundation in regards to who may be held liable for the victim’s damages.
Second, a victim should be prepared to give detailed information about what happened in the accident. An account of how the accident occurred is necessary, but so too is the location and timing of the wreck, the names and contact information of any witnesses, the weather at the time of the crash and whether any pictures, video or police reports were created with regard to the accident.
Third, medical and employment records should be gathered. These include detailed documentation of any diagnoses and treatment received as a result of the accident, as well as proof of employment and wages. Gathering this information could lead to a speedier recovery for the victim when compensation is awarded.
